Dongdaemun History Museum

The Dongdaemun History Museum was established in 2009 in order to preserve and exhibit relics discovered during the construction of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza and the Dongdaemun History & Culture Park. It reopened in August 2020 by completely reorganizing its permanent exhibition halls after 11 years. Excavated relics and videos, excavation blueprints engraved on the floor, and AR experiences are provided to allow the public to check out the history hidden within the site of the Dongdaemun Stadium, layer after layer.

Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Relic Area

The relics within the Dongdaemun History & Culture Park are relics from Hanyang, the capital of the Joseon Dynasty and part of modern day Seoul, discovered in the process of removing the stadium to construct Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), which includes the walls of Hanyangdoseong, government and military facilities from the early Joseon Dynasty, production facilities from the mid-Joseon Dynasty, and governmental facilities from the late-Joseon Dynasty. Additionally, a pond from a training park made during the Japanese Occupation and modern landscape facilities such as walk trails were discovered.

The area around the Heunginjimun Gate east of the Hanyangdoseong was known to have been destroyed by the Japanese and lost, but the discovery uncovered the Hanyangdoseong and the Two Floodgates constructed during the reigns of King Taejo and King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty, and the foundations of the wall created during the reign of King Yeongjo in the late-Joseon Dynasty.

The relics displayed in the Oullim Square are structures from the early-Joseon Dynasty discovered underneath the stadium site that retain its form and shape well and stone facilities, stone wall foundations, etc.

Relics from the early-Joseon Dynasty discovered under the site of the Dongdaemun Stadium soccer field—such as government buildings, armory, water collection facilities, and wells—are displayed in Relic Area 1 next to the Dongdaemun Stadium Memorial. Military installations during the late-Joseon Dynasty such as Hadogam (military camp) and Yeomchocheong (gunpowder office), and the training park made during the Japanese Occupation are found in Relic Area 2, in front of Gallery MUN.
