The Seoul Museum of History holds the “Seoul Half Century Exhibition Series” each year to take visitors through Seoul’s past and present. Marking the 14th series this year, the story of “Daechi-dong” unfolds in front of you. Up until the mid to late 1970s, Daechi-dong was just a rural village similar to any other rural villages in Korea until it became a part of Seoul in 1963 from Gwangju-gun, Gyeonggi-do. However, when large-scale apartment buildings were constructed one after another starting in the late 1970s, Daechi-dong, like other areas in Gangnam-gu, began to undergo major transformation. At around the same time, prestigious middle and high schools from Gangbuk-gu relocated to Gangnam-gu, and Daechi-dong and its surroundings developed into a densely populated region, becoming a widely known town for education. This exhibition will take to you the memoirs of how this typical rural village transformed into the top education district in the country. See for yourself the changes that the thirst for learning and rapid urbanization have brought about in Daechi-dong.
