 Introduction |

The Presseum is located on the third and fourth floors
of the Donga Media Center near Gwanghwamun Station in Seoul. It
is an area in which one can see the past records of newspapers as
is, how they serve as a faithful record of the past, and their role
up to the world of today.
The Presseum gives the opportunity to see again the society and
culture of the time, exactly the way it was.
The planned exhibition hall shows the eighty years of history of
the Donga Ilbo and its phases as the representative journal of Korea.
Every year, two planned exhibitions related to various newspaper-related
topics are held.
The Media Imagery Hall is a place to imagine the form of the newspaper
of the future, and to make use of visual media to obtain various
types of newspaper-related information.

1. History of the Donga Ilbo
The Donga Ilbo was established April 1st, 1920 and has a history
of over 80 years.
The Donga Ilbo, established during the dark times of the Japanese
occupation, was established for the people with the motto ¡®nationalism,
democracy, culture¡¯, the Donga Ilbo was the subject of suspended
publication a number of times such as for its article on the independence
movement in Pyeangyang, and the removal of the Japanese flag from
the breast of athlete Son Gijeong during the Olympics.
After liberation the newspaper the newspaper was also oppressed
for its role against the dictatorial government of the time that
it criticized, when in 1974-75 certain advertising contracts were
terminated by the Yushin government and in their place can be seen
only blank spaces, a first in the history of the press in the world.
With the advent of democracy during the latter half of the 1980s,
the Donga Ilbo began improvements to its paper quality and the advent
of new informational technology

2. Donga Ilbo and its readers

These were the encouraging words of a citizen during conflicts with
the government of Park Cheonghee.
It serves as a proud memory for the Donga Ilbo, as well as for the
people of Korea during the 1970s, and here can be seen exhibited
the situation of advertisements at the time and various encouragements
from the people printed in the paper.

3. Donga Broadcasting (DBS)
Donga Broadcasting was the first private broadcasting station in
the country, beginning broadcasting on April 25th, 1963..
News programs such as ¡®Radio Morning¡¯, documentaries, dramas, talk
shows and other programs have been popular, as well as ¡®cheerful
drawing room¡¯, ¡®Gounjeong Miunjeong¡¯ that have had a high listenership.
With the merger and abolition of media laws, broadcasting ended
at November 30th, 1980.

4. Cultural activities of the Donga Ilbo
Here are exhibited the cultural activities of the Donga Ilbo since
its founding in 1920.
New year literary subscription system, Donga Contest, Donga Dance
Contest, Donga Theatre Prize, Donga International Marathon, National
Science Invention Gathering, International Scholarly Conference,
Inchon Prize are just some of the cultural activities being continued
by the Donga Ilbo.

5. Newspaper creation room
Wouldn¡¯t it be sad to leave the Presseum without even one page of
a newspaper?
Here is the newspaper creation room you can come in and make your
own newspaper..
You can pick your own background, insert pictures, enter simple
articles, and make your own newspaper.
Come in with your friends, family or a special someone to make a
special memory.

6. Quiz game and information search
There is a quiz game on the content of the 3rd floor. If you get
all four levels right you and others will know you as an honorable
pressologist! In the information search corner you can look for
information on various newspaper sites in Korea and in other countries.

7. Newspapers of tomorrow
What are the newspapers of tomorrow going to look like?
Just like looking at a movie with moving images, connected to a
data bank, a two-way street between the journalist and the readers,
the future form of the newspaper and its expansions are shown.

8. Image education room
Here you can see the stages in the making of a newspaper in four
films of ten minutes in length.
¡°The Jurassic Times¡± is an animation showing the age of dinosaurs
in a comical vein, ¡°A day in the life of a reporter¡± is a documentary
showing the day of a reporter from the interview to editing, creation
and delivery of a newspaper. ¡°Newspaper production¡± shows the stages
in newspaper production through CTS, and the last one introduces
the Donga Ilbo itself.
