"Women Working in Hanyang" Special Exhibition of the Seoul History and Culture
Women of various classes lived in and around Hanyang during the Joseon dynasty and they worked in government offices which varied from the queen, the head of the lady-in-waiting, to women doctors at Hyeminseo (the medical authority of the Joseon). These women contributed to the stability of the national system by diligently performing their duties as well as changed Hanyang into a city with more vibrant lives through active participation in commercial activities to support their household finances and religious activities to pray for the wellness of their families rather than conforming to the Confucian view of women demanded by society. Hanyang was a city where women from all walks of life paved their own ways and lived fiercely during the Joseon dynasty. Through this exhibition, take a peek into the work and lives of women who were active in and outside of the city including those who stayed indoors.
