o About the exhibition
서울생활사박물관은 서울을 삶의 터전으로 일구고 살아온 사람들의 일상을 이야기하는 박물관입니다. 그동안 주생활, 의생활의 변화에 관해 조사, 연구한 기획전시가 지속적으로 개최되었습니다. 2023년에는 해방 이후부터 현대까지 외식생활이 어떻게 변하였는지를 보여주는 기획전시를 마련했습니다.
The Seoul Urban Life Museum is holding this special exhibition to shed light on the daily lives of everyday people living in Seoul. The museum has hosted numerous special exhibitions showcasing the research and study on changes in clothing customs and housing life. This year’s exhibition shows how dining-out practices have transformed since national independence to today.
오랜 세월 이어져 온 음식점의 이야기 속에는 외식생활 문화가 담겨 있습니다. 해방과 한국전쟁을 거치면서 ‘밖에서 식사를 한다’는 것은 살아가기 위해 끼니를 해결하는 일이었습니다. 그러나 시대의 변화에 따라 외식은 좋은 사람들과의 만남, 가족과 나누는 따뜻한 시간, 그리고 나만의 취향을 즐기는 공간이 되었습니다.
The story of long-standing restaurants and dining places reflects the culture of eating out. To post-war Koreans who have struggled since the 1940s and 1950s, “dining out” translated to barely filling the stomach to get by. However, over the course of the development of society, "dining out” has gained weight as social gatherings with good friends, great moments shared with family, and special places for gourmet experiences.
“오늘 뭐 먹지?”라는 한마디에 담긴 기대와 흥분을 만족시켜 온 음식점들의 이야기가 펼쳐집니다. 서울의 명물 설렁탕집부터 영원한 인기 외식 장소 중국집, 가족 외식의 상징이 된 갈비구이집 등을 살펴보며 서울의 외식 변천사에 공감할 수 있는 기회가 될 것입니다.
The question of “What to have for today?” unfolds stories of dining establishments that have satiated people’s anticipation and excitement for precious food and time. The exhibition will offer an opportunity to learn and empathize with the history of eating out in Seoul, seeing and getting to know about from Seoul’s notable seolleongtang (milky beef bone soup) and popular Chinese restaurants to “family dining” grilled beef diner.
