Seoul City Wall Museum Special Exhibition for the Second Half of 2023
Soldiers Rebuilt Hanyangdoseong in the Late Joseon
Period: November 21, 2023 – March 17, 2024
Venue: Special Exhibition Hall, Seoul City Wall Museum
In the late Joseon period, the management of Hanyangdoseong (the Seoul City Wall) was entrusted to three military camps — Hullyeondogam (the Military Training Command), Eoyeongcheong (the Royal Guard Command), and Geumwiyeong (the Capital Garrison). Hullyeondogam, established as the first of these three military camps, was formed in the efforts to create an army centered around gunners using muskets after the Japanese invasions of Korea in the 1590s, also known as the Imjin War. Especially after the 18th century, with the establishment of the defense system centered around the Three Military Gates, it played a pivotal role in the defense of the capital, Hanyang (currently Seoul). Additionally, the Military Training Command took on crucial tasks such as repairs and reconstruction of the city walls, becoming the main entity in charge of fortress management.
This exhibition is organized to explore the role of Hullyeondogam, also referred to as Hunguk, at the heart of the Three Military Gates system in the late Joseon era. It aims to offer an opportunity to reflect on the efforts of our ancestors who protected Hanyangdoseong in the Joseon Dynasty through the process of fortress management by this military camp.
