Seoul City Wall Museum Special Exhibition for the First Half of 2025
World Heritage and Capital Fortifications of Hanyang
“Capital fortifications of Hanyang” were built to defend Hanyang, the capital of Joseon.
While many contemporary cities have lost the heritage of their fortifications to urban development, Hanyang’s capital fortifications still preserve both tangible and intangible historical values, retaining their original appearance to this day.
In order to promote and preserve this value on an international level, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is collaborating with Gyeonggi-do Province, Goyang City, and the Korea Heritage Service to register Hanyang’s capital fortifications on the World Heritage List.
This special exhibition not only sheds light on the significance of UNESCO World Heritage as well as the World Heritage Convention and its operating organizations, but also delves into the selection process of the World Heritage List. We hope that visitors are able to see not just the domestic, but also the international value of Hanyang’s capital fortifications as World Heritage.
